Meet Dr.

Toby brooks

The truth is, most of us were never taught what to do when it all falls apart.

We learned how to win. To achieve. To climb. But no one taught us what to do when the applause stops, the dream dies, or the identity that used to fit us becomes a costume we can’t bear to wear anymore.

That’s where I come in.

Toby

I’m Dr. Toby Brooks, and I study the science of the comeback. As a performance scientist, professor, and coach, I’ve spent the last two decades decoding how high performers rebuild when their world feels like it’s falling apart. From NFL athletes and Navy SEALs to Grammy winners and corporate leaders, I explore how the strongest people on earth face their weakest moments and come back stronger.

My own journey started in a small coal town in Southern Illinois, the son of a miner who taught me the value of grit, work ethic, and finding a way when the road isn’t paved. I chased success through sports, academia, and fatherhood—earning five degrees and working with elite teams and organizations across the country.

And I’ve also come undone.

I know what it’s like to grieve what you thought life would be. The moments when dreams end, when plans crumble, and when the version of me I thought I had to be finally came undone. To watch a future you fought for disappear. To feel like the version of you that once made sense no longer fits. But I also know this: discipline is the great equalizer. You may not be able to be that athlete, soldier, or leader forever—but the discipline that got you there can take you even further.

What looked like failure became the lab where I began my life’s work: understanding how we rebuild not what was, but what’s next.

Now, through my podcast, books, coaching, and keynotes, I help high achievers stand back up and move forward. Together, we explore how failure is actually the catalyst for something even greater. We sift through the struggle and mine the mess for meaning.

Because the truth is, you already have what it takes. You don’t need more motivation. You need a map. You don’t need to bounce back. You need to build forward.

And that’s what I’m here to help you do.

Because the real edge isn’t in never falling. It’s in knowing exactly how to rise.

SUCCESS STORIES

Floating fragments

I found Becoming UnDone through social media.

Toby does a great job of navigating his guests through the triumphs of their lives. It allows a story to be told, and a picture to be painted for the audience to enjoy and learn from. I love how each episode has hidden gems for the listener to fully take in, from the masterful insight shared by he and his guests. Above anything else, Becoming Undone is a beacon of hope for me done with pure intentions, and that’s what keeps me coming back!

Introduce yourself and share why you love Becoming UnDone

I came across the series, Life, Lessons, and the Legacy of Dick Tomey on Facebook and it is a near and dear topic. When Toby and I were able to collaborate on contributing to the series, I couldn’t wait. Toby’s episode and how he was able to dig deep on Coach Tomey’s impact was fantastic to talk about and share with others.

Toby creates the kind of space every guest hopes for—thoughtful questions, genuine curiosity, and a conversation that feels real. If you want stories of resilience told with heart, this is the podcast.

As a guest, I felt completely at ease. Toby listens deeply and makes the conversation flow naturally, which is rare. If you’re invited on this show, take it—you’ll walk away grateful you did.

Values

Be real, not polished:

Authenticity beats appearance. I choose stories with scars over perfection without purpose.

Inverted black

Bounce back > look perfect:

I believe in falling down seven times and rising eight. Every comeback is a testament to character.

Black triangle

Always get better:

I never want to be a year older—only a year better.

Inverted black

Say the hard thing:

Courageous conversations change lives. I speak the truth in love (even when it’s uncomfortable) because real growth requires real talk.

Black triangle

Redefine who you are:

Your past doesn’t have the final say. Every chapter is a chance to rewrite the narrative.

Black triangle

Go again. Then go again:

Persistence fuels purpose. When it doesn’t go as planned—reset, refocus, and go again. And again. And again.

Inverted black

Lead with humility:

True leadership isn’t about being the loudest in the room. It’s about lifting others up.

Black triangle

I never want to be a year older—only a year better.
